LatinoJustice PRLDEF sues Frederick County, MD
for racial profiling
LatinoJustice PRLDEF has filed a lawsuit alleging that Frederick County Sheriff Charles Jenkins violated the rights of Roxana
Orellana when she was taken into custody on October 7, 2008.
The complaint alleges that Ms.
Orellana was quietly eating a sandwich on her lunch break when two Frederick County Deputy
Sheriffs began interrogating her about her immigration status, took her into custody, and
transferred her to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”).
A new civil lawsuit filed in federal court alleges that Prince William County police unjustly raided the home of a Latino family and used excessive force to arrest the parents, who were later acquitted of any criminal wrongdoing.
Young Latino activists of LatinoJustice PRLDEF’s Youth Civic Engagement Network join thousands of other young leaders across the country today to stand up for equal rights for undocumented students. LatinoJustice PRLDEF has called upon the U.S. Department of Justice
to start an independent investigation of the Suffolk County Police
Department, alleging that the department has discriminated against
Latinos by failing to fully investigate attacks against them and by
instituting polices that discourage Latinos from reporting crimes.
LatinoJustice PRLDEF has warned Mahopac Town Supervisor Kenneth Schmitt that his attempts to initiate a program which would authorize local police to arrest Latino day laborers on public sidewalks could lead to a costly lawsuit. read more
